WHAT ARE INFANT SERVICES?

Infant and Child services include various bodywork modalities specifically adapted to help infants and children live well and thrive.  Modalites include massage, Craniosacral Therapy, and Visceral Manipulation Therapy.

INFANT CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

Craniosacral Therapy is a light-touch manual therapy used to encourage the body's self-correcting mechanisms. Generally using about five grams of pressure, or about the weight of a small coin, the practitioner evaluates the body's craniosacral system. This system plays a vital role in maintaining the environment in which the central nervous system functions. It consists of the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord as well as the attached bones-including the skull, face, and jaw, which make up the cranium, and the tailbone area, or sacrum.  Craniosacral therapy should be considered when a child:

  • Has trouble with latching and breastfeeding

  • Struggles to have normal range of motion during feeding or other activities

  • Exhibits trouble with balance

  • Is diagnosed with lip-tie/tongue-tie

  • Is developmentally delayed or referred to an early intervention program

  • Is referred to a speech pathologist

INFANT VISCERAL MANIPULATION

Visceral Manipulation Therapy is a gentle manual therapy that assesses the structural relationships between the viscera (organs), and their fascial or ligamentous attachments to the various systems in the body.   Also a light touch technique, Visceral Manipulation Therapy encourages your own natural mechanisms to improve the functioning of your organs.  In infants, adjusting to variations in their mother's diet can result in digestive issues including reflux, constipation, and colic.  Visceral Manipulation Therapy can help infants by ensuring the stomach, intestines, and digestive valves are working properly.  Visceral Manipulation Therapy should be considered when a child:

  • Suspicions or diagnoses of acid reflux

  • Has moderate to severe colic

  • Struggles with constipation or has trouble with bowel movements

  • Exhibits rigidity or arching of back

  • Sleep issues

  • Failure to gain weight

INFANT MASSAGE INSTRUCTION (CLASS)

Infant Massage Instruction classes are taught to give you confidence as a new parent and allow you to learn techniques to bond with your baby.  Babies who are massaged sleep better and rely on parents to help them in times of discomfort. These classes teach parents how to perform these massage techniques on their children.  Benefits of infant massage:

  • Connect with and calm your baby

  • Treat colic, gas, and other digestive issues

  • Help baby develop a sense of self

  • Boost baby’s immune system

  • Educate you about other therapies to help you and your baby in the coming months and years

The class also introduces essential oils that can be used to calm, soothe, and help your baby and includes samples of some of the oils as a free gift to you for participating.

The class itself takes about 45 minutes but allows time for diaper changes, feedings, and anything else families need to make the class calm and relaxing. Participants are asked to bring a pillow, a baby blanket, and your diaper bag,
